November 10, 2021
Good Morning!
We’re sending this out a little later than usual – but maybe we can blame it on the struggle of adjusting to the time change last Sunday?  Ok, maybe not.

But speaking of last Sunday
(Notice how we did that – just subtly changed the subject?) Last Sunday we kicked off our Missions Christmas offering with a great event - lunch with food from around the world! A big thanks goes out to our Global Missions Team (and a few extras) for making it happen! The food was fun – and so was the Kahoot game! (And just a reminder that our offering will run through the month of November. You can contribute in person or online.)

Thanks also to all of you who took a recipe and made a dish! We ate a lot of food! Part of it was that we all seemed to feel compelled to at least try a little of every dish! If you would like a recipe from the event, you can find them here.

 Speaking of recipes
Need a recipe for pumpkin pie?  Sorry, you’ll have to check on Pinterest for that.  But we can tell you a few fun facts about pumpkin pie.
  • The first recipe for pumpkin pie was published in 1796 in a cookbook titled An American Cookery by an American Orphan written by Amelia Simmons.  It was supposedly the first cookbook published in America, and all of its recipes were native to America.
  • The worlds largest pumpkin pie was baked back in 2010.  It contained 2,012 pounds of canned pumpkin, 109 gallons of evaporated milk, 2,796 eggs, 7 pounds of salt, 14 pounds of cinnamon, an 525 pounds of sugar.  It weighed 3,699 pounds and was 20’ across.  (People are still eating it.  Not really.)
  • An estimated 20% of Americans have eaten an entire pumpkin pie completely by themselves.  We would ask if you are one of them, but this is No Shame November!
Speaking of No Shame November

Our message series this month is designed to help you find “the trail” out of shame! Most of us deal with shame issues on some level – things that we have done that we deeply regret, things that have been done to us or said to us that have greatly affected us, or things that we have been involved in that have had lingering impact.

All of the above lead to shame when we let them define who we are.  Fortunately it is not how God sees us, and He doesn’t want us to live in shame.  He wants to help us defeat it.  We’ll be talking about it more again this Sunday (and if you missed last Sunday, you might want to catch the service online on our website or YouTube channel).

Speaking of this Sunday

This Sunday is College Sunday!  We won’t be talking about football (although college football is important); we’ll be talking about campus ministry!  We have special guests who are on staff with Intervarsity who will be joining us to share what God is doing on the campuses where they serve.  They will also be hosting proxy stations, and joining in a discussion on some of the issues facing Gen Z.  It’s another edition of “can’t miss church.”

Speaking of “can’t miss church”

Our annual Day of Thanks is just around the corner!  Every year we hit the pause button on the Sunday before Thanksgiving to express our gratitude for God’s blessings to us.  We are planning another great service featuring music, scripture reading and communion.  Plus, our friends from New Springfield (and their worship team) will be joining us.  So plan to join us on November 21.

Speaking of opossums

Ok, so we weren’t actually speaking of opossums, however, I have a very important fact to share.  Did you know that opossums don’t play dead, they merely pass out when they get too excited?  Like when they actually make it across the road without getting hit by a car.

Speaking of roads

Roads are kind of like trails, and right now you can claim your very own Life Trails water bottle! As part of our year-long emphasis we are giving out these wickedly nice hydration containers to all WCCers, with one hitch. You have to “earn” it. And how do you earn it? We’re glad you asked.

“Wait a minute, did you just say “wickedly nice”?  That’s an oxymoron!”

Speaking of oxymorons

Have you ever really thought about some of the odd things we say? Like ... “I clearly misunderstood.” Hmm. Or this: “That was seriously funny.” Or, “We had a small crowd.” How about, “Do you have the original copy?” And can something be pretty ugly? And did we really have a Civil War? And can we drink out of plastic glasses? Maybe not, but you can drink out of plastic water bottles!!!

So speaking again of Life Trails water bottles

You can earn yours by simply being generous.  You can participate in one of our official projects like the following:
  • Bring Your Turkey to Church Day – That is this Sunday, November 14.  We’ve committed to helping New Springfield Church by providing 25 turkeys that can be distributed to families of need in Oakland County.  Want to help?  Just bring a frozen bird to church this Sunday!
  • Shoe Box Christmas – our Faith Mountain kids and families are participating in Operation Christmas Child and filling shoeboxes with gifts.  You can fill a box yourself or simply bring in items for our kids to pack.  Details are available at the Information Center.  (Return date is Nov. 21)
  • Food box packing – We have a group that regularly packs the boxes of food for New Springfield, but most of them are out of town this week – and we have a packing night coming up tomorrow!  If you would be available to help for about an hour in the evening, we can put you to work.  Just email back and we will get you the details.
Or you can just go out on your own and be generous with someone.  Generosity doesn’t have to be just money – it can be time, attention, the sharing of resources, etc.  But once you’ve taken the “Trail to Generous City,” feel free to grab your water bottle any time!  Wednesday, Sunday, even Saturday!

Speaking of Saturday

One the second Saturday of each month we host a 8:00 a.m. prayer meeting at the church.  Our theme verse is Psalm 127:1 which says, “Except the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.”  And that is so true - especially as it relates to us as a church.  We want to do all we can to build WCC, but unless God blesses, our labors are going to fall woefully short.  And that’s why we’re praying – and that’s why we would love to have you join us!  And if a prayer meeting is new to you – no worries, we won’t put you on the spot.
Blog comments will be sent to the moderator
