When I saw this cartoon, I had to laugh and hopefully you got a chuckle out of it too. If there is one thing this guy in the cartoon will get  it is a “stiff neck”. The past five years or so I’ve have had a problem with getting a stiff neck if I sit on the couch wrong or if my pillow is too flat. But there is a difference between having a stiff neck and being stiff-necked.  In today’s proverb verse one right away talks about it.

Proverbs 29:1 (NIV) A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.

To be stiff-necked is to be have a hard heart, unrepentant attitude, or to be unteachable by God or anyone else.  As you read through the chapter, I encourage you to look for ways that are stiff-necked and ways that are teachable.

Read Proverbs 29

After reading this passage I am reminded of the vital importance to having a heart that desires to be honest  about ones failures and sins because ultimately that leads to a life where you know the joy of God and His goodness in your life.  In this proverb there is a both encouragement and a warning. The encouragement is to live life open to God’s teaching and correction in your life, whether He uses the conviction of the Holy Spirit or correction of others in your life.

The warning is to not be one who is stiff-necked. That person who would rather not listen to the Spirit of Christ or others God has put into their life. It is a warning that the “stiff-necked” or harden person will eventually reap the consequences of their actions.

Ultimately maturity and growth as a follower of Jesus Christ only happens when one is willing to let God bring correction into their life as they live life. I hate to think about where I be if I  had chosen not to listen to Holy Spirit teaching in my life.

Today’s Wisdom: Having a teachable heart is wise.
