Growing up as a High School kid I (Mark Manzer) went to a camp in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan called Gitche Gumee Bible Camp. My family only lived 45 minutes away so we would be up there a lot volunteering or going to evening services.  My older brother Tim was one who was always looking for ways to pull pranks on people so the summer he worked at Gitche he would look for ways to prank the “downstate kids”.   One Saturday night he convinced me to be apart of his plans…

The plan was to take these students from “downstate” on a walk through the local cemetery at dusks. It was one of those cemeteries that had ferns growing along the walkway that went through the cemetery in a horseshoe pattern. He would go earlier and lie in wait for us to come and as we passed by, he would make noise like that of bear and move through the ferns.

The plan was to scare them further into the cemetery and then he would move hidden by the ferns toward the entrance and try to scare them again as they tried to exit. Needless to say, it worked perfectly and there was a lot of screaming and running. My brother eventually reveal himself and then they all found out I was part of the plan too. It was a good laugh and my brother enticing me into this prank did not cause any damage to my relationship with the “downstate kids.”

But there are things we can be enticed by that will bring damage in life. Throughout Proverbs you will see warnings to the follower of God to not be “enticed” by the fool, the sinner, or sinful ways. The writer gives a warning back in Proverbs 1:10-11 (ESV) 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. 11 If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason;

In today’s passage he gives a warning to the one who would look to “lie in wait” to do evil, he says…

Proverbs 24:15-16 (ESV) 15  Lie not in wait as a wicked man against the dwelling of the righteous; do no violence to his home; 16  for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.

As you read through the chapter today look for the warnings about the ways of the evil person or the wicked one.

Read Proverbs 24

  • What warnings did you see?
  • How is choosing righteous ways described?
  • What wisdom or insight is there to be gain from the chapter that would motivate us to choose the righteous way vs. the wicked way?

In verse 16 there is an encouragement to pursue righteousness. It is a promise that even when we face difficult times God will help the righteous get back up, that is not so for the wicked, ultimately, they will not succeed.

Today’s wisdom:

The righteous way is the wise way.
